How to Locate Your Property Tax Refund in a California County

If you're expecting a property tax refund in a California county, you can follow these steps to locate its status:

1. Check With Your County Tax Collector or Treasurer

Each California county handles its own property tax billing and refunds. Visit your county tax collector's or treasurer's office website for refund information.

Many counties offer an online tool to check your refund status by entering your Assessment Number, Parcel Number (APN), or Property Address.

2. Contact the County Assessor’s Office

If your refund is related to an assessment reduction or appeal (such as under Proposition 8), the County Assessor’s Office may provide details about adjustments and refund eligibility.

3. Search for Unclaimed Property

If a refund check was issued but never cashed, the funds might be turned over to the California State Controller’s Office as unclaimed property. You can search here:

4. Call or Email

If online tools are unavailable, you can call or email your county's tax office. Have your parcel number or property address ready.
